Student Awards, Funding, and Activities

We define “student” as anyone currently enrolled or recently graduated (May 2008) from any accredited high school, college or university (including post-docs).

What’s in it for Students? Plenty.

Cash Awards for best Student Presentations and best Student Posters.

  • First prize $500
  • Second prize $300
  • Third prize $200

Present your research to an audience of 1000 conservationists. Oral presenters are invited to submit a manuscript for publication in the Conference Proceedings-- July 25, 2008 is the final deadline to submit an abstract. Read the instructions for submitting an abstract and send before the deadline to abstractscnps.org.

Learn the most recent and effective conservation science from experts. There will be over 200 papers (oral and poster) presented by ecologists, biologists, restoration managers, and other scientists tackling the most pressing issues in conservation science.

Meet people. Meet agency management, academic experts, consulting firm principals, and a wide variety of others who share your interest in the conservation of California’s unique flora. It’s a chance to meet future collaborators and network for jobs.

Professional-Student Mixer. Talk with people who do what you want to do. Meet restoration managers, academics and agency staff who can tell you how to get the job you want.

New ideas. Hear from a spectrum of public policy makers, scientists, land stewards, and conservationists on solutions for native plant conservation in California and western North America.

Job and Resume Board. Find out who is hiring, looking for graduate or postdoctoral positions, and other opportunities for experience. Post your resume so employers can take a look.

Funding for student registration and travel. Funds are available for student registration and travel expenses. You may apply for funding beginning September 1. Application forms will be available on our website, Aug 1. Funding priority will be given in the following descending order: Student presenters (oral or poster), student members of the California Native Plant Society, (join now!), minority students (there is a fund for minority students), and other students wishing to attend the conference.

Volunteers for the conference receive a $75 rebate on their registration fees. There are many opportunities to volunteer before or during the conference.

What’s in it for the future of California's flora?

We hope to inspire a new generation of researchers, conservationists, and environmental advocates who will be confronted with unprecedented environmental challenges.

New Leaders to face a great challenge. California’s unique flora has never been more threatened. California can set an example for the world of conservation success in spite of climate change and population growth.
